Bhagat Singh 116th Birth Anniversary: Celebrating the Legacy of a Revolutionary Hero -28 SEPTEMBER 2023

BHAGAT SINGH 116TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: Bhagat Singh, one of the most revered martyrs of the Indian independence movement, was born on September 28, 1907, in Banga, Punjab (present-day Pakistan). He was a fearless revolutionary who dedicated his life to the cause of freedom. Singh’s courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to his ideals continue to inspire people around the world.

On his 116th birth anniversary today on Thursday, September 28, we celebrate his legacy and pay homage to his supreme sacrifice.

His birth anniversary is celebrated across the country with high spirits.

Full of fiery spirits and a deep longing for freedom, Bhagat Singh dedicated his life to fighting against British colonial rule.

At the young age of 23, he was sentenced to death by the British government in the Lahore conspiracy case on 23 March 1931.

At the age of 12, Bhagat Singh had seen the JallianwalaBagh massacre, after that he took a vow to free India from Britishers.

He was a member of the Hindustan Republican Association.

Once, Bhagat Singh’s father Kishen Singh had to pay a hefty sum of 60,000 to secure his release. As his love for the country was his top priority, Bhagat Singh ran away from home to participate in India’s freedom struggle.

After witnessing the brutal beating and death of Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh and his fellow revolutionaries pledged to take revenge. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru targeted John P. Saunders (who was mistaken for James A. Scott) police officer responsible for Lala’s death.

All three revolutionaries were executed in secrecy on 23 March 1931, even before their trial on 24 March. Their deaths shook the whole country and left a deep void in the hearts of the people.

His sacrifice and resilience continue to inspire people of different ages.

His legacy serves as a reminder to the youth to stand up against the wrong and fight for justice.

Bhagat Singh was a staunch advocate of socialism. He believed in a society where wealth and resources were shared equally. He was also attracted to anarchist and Marxist ideologies.

Observance of International Literacy Day -08 September 2023

Special Assembly with conduction of Literacy Pledge;

Introduction about the day

An Inhouse exhibition of rare books under the programme "Every book has its reader"

Slogan Writing Competition

A poem on International literacy Day

From the pages of books to the screens we scroll,

Literacy is the key to unlock growth.

With each word read and each story shared,

We learn, we grow, we show that we care.

In the magic of words, we find our delight,

Imagination soars, taking flight.

With every word written, a new world is born,

A journey of knowledge from dusk until dawn.

Let's honour the day and unite,

Promote literacy for it's a wondrous right.

For in the written word, we find our voice,

Connect, grow, and rejoice.

Read a book, write a word or teach a friend

On Literacy Day, let's all extend

Our love for words, for stories, for art

For literacy empowers, it's where growth starts.

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY - 08 September 2023

Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope” ~ Kofi Annan

A person can easily be held back by a lack of essential literacy skills at every stage of their life. They won’t be able to succeed academically as a child, won’t be able to find employment as a young adult, and won’t be able to fund their own child’s education as a parent. A fairer society and social mobility are made more challenging by this intergenerational cycle.

This is why International Literacy Day is celebrated on 08 September every year.

Literacy is the passport to a comfortable and well-settled life. International Literacy Day is celebrated to:

1) Spread awareness of the importance of literacy.

2) Being thankful to be able to read and write.

How Literacy can help?

 1) Mental Well-Being

Even reading can help you unwind physically by bringing your heart rate down and releasing tension in your muscles. It offers a constructive diversion.

Reading, writing, and mental math exercises keep brain cells healthy as we age, lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia later in life, according to studies.

Community involvement

The inability of adults and children to participate fully and make contributions to the benefit of society is caused by a lack of literary skills, which restricts social involvement at all age levels.

Effective Communication

The ability to read, write, listen, and speak in a way that allows us to communicate successfully and comprehend the world around us is referred to as literacy. Students who lack fundamental literacy skills may struggle in school, have trouble landing a job, experience inequality, or have trouble getting access to healthcare.

Escape from Poverty

Reading, writing, and mathematic proficiency is necessary for employment that offers the chance to move up the social and economic ladder. One life at a time, literacy helps to break the cycle of poverty.

Theme of international Literacy Day 2023

This year 2023 International Literacy Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme, ‘"Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies". This means helping more people learn how to read, write, and understand things in a changing world. By doing this, we’re creating a strong base for societies that can last a long time and be calm and peaceful. In other words, it’s about making sure everyone can read and write to help our world become better and more peaceful, especially during times of change.

Ways to use the power of literacy in your own life to honour International Literacy Day:

Read a book

When did you last settle in to read a book? Reading offers the door to a world of information and adventure, whether you get it from your neighbourhood bookshop, Amazon, or on your Kindle. You can peek into people’s lives all across the world through books.

Financial Literacy Day Activity

More than ever, it’s crucial to have a strong foundation in financial literacy, but regrettably, neither parents nor teachers frequently emphasize this skill. These financial literacy exercises can help students of all ages learn how to manage their money for the rest of their lives.

Everyone’s future success depends on their ability to use technology.

Together, come up with a list of justifications for the significance of learning to read, write, and speak.

If you can, put your phone away in another room or turn it off completely. If there are other gadgets in your room then you can turn them off as well to focus on the book you are reading.
  • Set reading goals for yourself: Setting reading goals can help you stay motivated and on track with your reading. You can set goals for the number of books you want to read in a year, the amount of time you want to read each day, or even the types of books you want to read. Setting measurable goals can help you a lot.
  • Join a book club or discussion group: This can be an amazing way to meet other people who love to read. You make new friends and connect with people who share your interests.

International Nelson Mandela Day -18 July 2023

Early Life

Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader, who fought against apartheid, or racial discrimination against blacks, in South Africa.

Mandela was born on July 18 in South Africa in 1918. His name was Rolihlahla which meant trouble maker. When Mandela was nine years old, he was adopted by his father’s friend. A teacher gave him the name Nelson when he was a child. Mandela studied law and opened South Africa’s first black law firm.

Political Career

Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) to fight against apartheid. At first, he wanted the ANC to follow Mohandas Gandhi’s non violent protest methods.

After the ANC was banned in 1960, he led a secret army called ‘Spear of the Nation.’ He traveled to other countries to ask for help. Later, he began to doubt the effectiveness of Gandhi’s methods. He wanted to bomb some buildings, but not hurt anyone. The government called him a terrorist and jailed him, in 1962. He spent 27 years in prison. There was an international campaign for his release.

Finally, Mandela was released from prison in 1990. His work paid off when all races were allowed to vote in the 1994 election for the first time. He won the election and became the first black President of South Africa. He retired in 1999. He died on 5 December 2013, after a lung illness.

Achievements

He received the Peace Prize in 1993.

Mandela has received over 695 awards. This is the maximum number of awards anyone has ever got.

On his birthday, Nelson Mandela Day, people are asked to spend 67 minutes helping others. Why 67? He spent 67 years serving South Africa.

Nelson Mandela Quotes

Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.

Lead from the back- and let others believe they are in front.

It always seems impossible until it’s done.

There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
