International Yoga Day 2023 Theme
The International Yoga Day 2023 will be celebrated on the official theme, “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, which also represents as “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
धैर्यं यस्य पिता क्षमा च जननी शान्तिश्चिरं गेहिनी
सत्यं सूनुरयं दया च भगिनी भ्राता मनः संयमः।
शय्या भूमितलं दिशोSपि वसनं ज्ञानामृतं भोजनं
एते यस्य कुटिम्बिनः वद सखे कस्माद् भयं योगिनः।।
Meaning that by regularly practising Yoga, a person can imbibe some very good qualities like courage which protects like a father, forgiveness as possessed by a mother & mental peace which becomes a permanent friend. Through regular practise of Yoga truth becomes our child, mercy our sister, self-control our brother, the earth becomes our bed & knowledge satiates our hunger.
The idea of International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, where a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced by India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji.
The date of June 21 was chosen as it is the Summer Solstice, the day
where there is the most sun out of every other day of the year. Overall, it
received support from 177 nations, the highest number of co-sponsors for any UN
resolution, proclaiming June 21 as the International Yoga Day.
How is International Yoga Day will be celebrated in 2023?
According to officials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the global celebration of yoga from the UN Headquarters in New York. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will lead the celebrations in India from Jabalpur, along with Union Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal holding a press conference in New Delhi.
The unique additions to International Yoga Day 2023:
Ocean Ring of Yoga:
The Ocean Ring of Yoga describes the Indian naval ships that will participate in the Common Yoga Protocol demonstration in nine ports around the globe.
Yoga Bharatmala:
The Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, ITBP, BSF, and BRO will all work together to demonstrate the chain of yoga creating Yoga Bharatmala.
Har Aangan Yoga:
The International Day of Yoga in 2023 aims for the participation of one and all irrespective of all gender, sex and age with its 'Har Aangan Yoga' initiative.

- 2016. Theme: Connect the Youth
The event was held in Chandigarh on June 21, 2016. 30,000 people and 150 Divyangjan participated along with the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
- 2015. Theme: Yoga for Harmony & Peace
Held at Rajpath in New Delhi on June 21, 2015. The event registered 2 Guinness World Records- first for 35,985 people participating in a single Yoga session at a single venue and the second for most nationalities (84) participating in a Yoga session 2015.
